Rains ‘flood’ the AICM and streets of CDMX

The 16 municipalities of Mexico City are on alert waiting for heavy rains for the afternoon and evening of this Monday, August 21, according to authorities.

In addition, heavy rainfall caused a ceiling to fall in terminal 1 of the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), which caused flooding throughout the property. Images on social networks show passengers walking through the building while avoiding passing through puddles of water.

The appearance of water on the ground of Terminal 2 and other sites of the country’s main airport was also reported due to heavy rains.

According to the Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection of the country’s capital, rain is expected from 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. this Monday, that is, it will rain all night in different parts of the city. capital of the country.

Two municipalities are the most affected, as they have a Red Alert, while four others are on Orange Alert and 10 more are on Yellow Alert.

Civil Protection indicates that the alert level by mayor is this:

Red Alert, with rains of between 50 and 70 millimeters: Álvaro Obregón and Cuajimalpa.
Orange Alert, with rains of 30 to 49 millimeters: Iztapalapa, Magdalena Contreras, Xóchimilco and Venustiano Carranza.
Yellow Alert, with rains of between 15 and 29 millimeters: Azcapotzalco, Benito Juárez, Cuauhtémoc, Coyoacán, Gustavo A. Madero, Iztacalco, Milpa Alta, Miguel Hidalgo, Tláhuac and Tlalpan.

Hail is possible in all municipalities, as well as wind gusts exceeding 50 kilometers per hour and flooding on main avenues. For this reason, different agencies in Mexico City activated the rain operation.

The rains this Monday in Mexico City are due to a low pressure channel that runs through the center, north and west of the country, combined with the entry of humidity from the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico due to the circulation of a tropical depression and low pressure systems.

Given the Civil Protection alert due to rain, the authorities recommend these measures:

Have your most important documents on hand and in an airtight bag (in the case of municipalities on Red Alert).
Turn on fog lights if you are driving.
Stay away from flooded areas.
Close the doors and windows of your house.
Wear a reflective raincoat if you ride a bicycle.
Do not cross streets or avenues with water currents.
Remove garbage from drains.
