U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, emphasizes Mexico’s continued significance as a vital partner in shaping a more prosperous and competitive North America. During the High-Level Economic Dialogue between Mexico and the United States, both nations discussed strengthening coordination along their common border. The meeting, attended by Mexican Chancellor Alicia Bárcena and Secretary of Economy Raquel Buenrostro, addressed critical issues such as migration, fentanyl trafficking, and arms trade.
Blinken highlighted efforts to streamline inspections through a model port and expedite wait times, making legal crossings more accessible while bolstering capabilities to combat fentanyl and other illicit drugs. Regarding irregular migration, he acknowledged the need to address root causes, emphasizing the improvement of economic opportunities in southern Mexico and across South American nations.
“Empowering individuals to provide for their families and build a future at home is what they will choose when they feel economically secure,” stated Blinken, underlining the importance of creating sustainable livelihoods.
Furthermore, Blinken emphasized the joint endeavor to ensure that workers on both sides of the Mexico-U.S. border are prepared for future success. This involves institutions providing training and education in areas such as English proficiency and semiconductor technology.
