More and more, families are extending beyond humans, embracing the concept of the multi-species family. This universe of mutual affection not only benefits our animal companions but also has a positive impact on humans. In this article, we explore the benefits of having pets and how a festival dedicated exclusively to these beloved creatures can be an opportunity to strengthen this loving and healthy relationship.
Under the slogan “the first festival where pets bring their humans,” “Mascotear” is a unique festival designed to be an inclusive space and a leisure event for families and their furry friends. This annual event will take place on September 30th and October 1st, from 11:00 AM to 6:30 PM, at Av. Figueroa Alcorta and Dorrego in Palermo. Admission is free, but registration is required through a dedicated landing page.
Have you ever wondered about the advantages of having a pet? How does it influence human behavior, and what impact does it have on our health? Juan Atilio Di Paolo, a veterinarian, sheds light on these questions, stating, “The benefits of pet ownership are numerous. They can reduce feelings of loneliness, promote physical contact, and enhance communication. In fact, it has been proven that pets were a great source of support and companionship for many people during the pandemic.”
He continues, “Pets also help reduce stress. Several studies have shown that interacting with animals lowers cortisol levels (a stress-related hormone) and decreases blood pressure. The physical activity involved in daily walks with your dog keeps you active and on the move.”
Another remarkable benefit is how pets contribute to the development of responsibility, empathy, and respect in children. Di Paolo explains, “The interaction of animals, especially trained dogs, with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), fosters greater independence, autonomy, and freedom.”
In this context, responsible adoption becomes a perfect path. Di Paolo emphasizes, “The most crucial aspect is that adopting a dog or cat should be a conscious decision and a long-term commitment that requires responsibility. Establishing good habits of feeding, hygiene, exercise routines, and promoting socialization are key aspects when adopting a pet.”
Regular visits to the veterinarian are crucial to ensure your pets’ health since clinical signs and diseases aren’t always easy to detect. Di Paolo advises, “During these visits, it’s essential to consider the preventive healthcare plan, including proper deworming and vaccination. Discussions about neutering should also take place. Preventive medicine is of utmost importance. It’s always better to prevent a disease than to cure it. Taking our dogs for check-ups without waiting for signs of illness and scheduling routine semi-annual or annual check-ups will be a beneficial habit for both them and us.”
He adds, “Proper nutrition is the foundation of good health. That’s why consulting with a veterinarian to choose the right food for each stage of development, considering size, age, and breed to meet their nutritional needs, is essential. Meeting these needs requires a complete, balanced, and carefully formulated diet, and understanding that nutrient requirements change with their life stage.”
Pets not only bring joy and companionship into our lives but also offer a multitude of health and well-being benefits. “Mascotear” serves as a celebration of the harmonious relationship between humans and their animal companions, emphasizing the importance of responsible pet ownership and the positive impact it has on our lives. As we embrace the concept of multi-species families, let’s cherish the many ways our beloved pets contribute to our happiness and overall well-being.
