Luxury Traveler’s New Focus: In a post-pandemic world, luxury travelers are shifting their priorities towards experiences that connect them with nature and local communities. Beyond lavish accommodations, they seek to make a positive impact on the destinations they visit, according to Matthew Upchurch, CEO of Virtuoso, a leading luxury travel advisory platform.
“Many luxury travelers want to see how their spending contributes to the places they visit,” Upchurch stated during World Tourism Day celebrations. “The new luxury traveler yearns for unique destinations, interaction with locals, and a more adventurous yet culturally immersive experience.”
Virtuoso’s Influence: Virtuoso is a platform of luxury travel specialists with 20,000 advisors in 55 countries, serving travelers in over 130 countries, generating an estimated $30 billion in transaction volume. Luxury travelers, as defined by Virtuoso, spend a minimum of $500 per day during their visits.
Resilience of Luxury Tourism: Luxury tourism was among the first segments to rebound, even during the initial months of the pandemic. This resurgence boosted hotel occupancy rates in destinations like Cancún and Los Cabos in Mexico, where Virtuoso projected a 47% increase in luxury segment sales for 2023 compared to 2019.
Changing Stay Dynamics: The rise of digital nomads, who work remotely from different locations, often in other countries, has contributed to longer stays among luxury travelers. This shift has altered perceptions of luxury tourism, creating new synergies.
Upchurch notes that pre-pandemic, luxury travelers and backpackers were seen as opposite ends of the spectrum but have now begun to complement each other.
“The pandemic was a wake-up call because people realized how important travel is for connecting with family and maintaining mental health. That’s why I believe tourism is so vital,” he explains.
Promising Outlook for Mexico: The CEO of Virtuoso believes that the Mexican market holds significant potential due to its combination of high-quality service and a growing product offering.
“What excites me is that there are more five-star hotels in Mexico than in the entire Caribbean. Everything is expanding, and when we talk about luxury products, there are many distinct projects,” he concludes.
